Prestwick City Guide

The name Prestwick means 'village of the priest' and was founded in the 10th century. Situated 30 miles south of Glasgow on the west coast of Scotland, the borourgh of Prestwick has long been a popular holiday resort due to its beautiful sands. It is also a central spot for avid golfers - Prestwick held the first Open Championship in 1860 and so has an extensive golfing history.

The airport itself handles over 2.5 million passengers a year, and was originally the transatlantic gateway for Scotland. Now owned by Stagecoach Holdings Plc the airport has been developed into a freight, holiday charter and budget flight centre because of the lack of air traffic congestion and night curfews usually found in the larger cities. It also has a good track record with the weather - Glasgow Prestwick stays open when many other airports are forced to close.
